Welcome to Lightning Ridge Holsteins

Lightning Ridge Holsteins was founded back in 1999 by Declan Patten. Over that time we have strived to purchase the best cows possible to build a strong foundation for Lightning Ridge (LR). The very first founding cow at LR was Ganook Storm Tabaret 3, she was only 5 months old and was purchased for $8000 at the Ganook Dispersal Sale. In believing in buying the best, she was backed by 4 generations of EX cows and went onto classify VG88 Max 2nd lact.

The family farm (Ryanna Holsteins) was sold and dispersed in May 2010. The top price cow of the sale was a direct daughter of the founding Storm Tabaret. She was the very first cow bred by Declan, Lightning Ridge Skychief Tabaret was classified VG89 Max and had won Senior Champion Cow, All Breeds at Melbourne Royal. A successful show cow she sold for $22,000 to Dundee Holsteins and has since placed 2nd Six Years in milk at International Dairy Week and classified EX. The dispersal was the 2nd highest average in 2010 at $3500 (150 lots).

In early 2010 we felt it was time to invest globally into some of the top Holstein cows around the world. It all started with Gordel Goldwyn Peg EX-93. Peg started the year by winning First Four Year Old and Reserve Grand Champion at the Ontario Spring Discovery, she followed it by winning at the Autumn Opportunity Show and placing an outstanding 4th Four Yr Old at the Royal Winter Fair 2010! This success landed Peg and Lightning Ridge Holsteins its first All Canadian Nomination. Another animal that proved to be successful for Lightning Ridge Holsteins was Greenlea Adv Cara VG87 @ 2 yrs. She was Grand Champion R&W at the All American Harrisburg Show, 2nd Senior Two Yr Old at Madison and HM Intermediate Champion at the Royal Winter Fair 2011. This success earned Lightning Ridge and Cara the Reserve All American Two Yr Old title for 2010! We are continuing to invest in North America and so far have not been disappointed!

None of Lightning Ridge Holsteins success would be possible without some very key people in its development. My parents, Shane & Toria Patten of Ryanna Holsteins have been instrumental to my development as a person and cowman. Craig Rapley of New Zealand has been a key partner of mine for many years now and I would like to thank Craig for his continued support.  I would like to thank my other great partners and without you I truly believe that Lightning Ridge Holstiens would not be where we are today without you.
